JobsNOW Project under way at Western Piedmont Community College

To address the economic dilemma in Burke County, Western Piedmont Community College has joined area industry, the Employment Security Commission and the North Carolina Community College System to promote the JobsNOW "12 in 6" Project.

JobsNOW is the initiative of Governor Beverly Perdue with other partners to offer training in 12 occupational career fields that can be completed in six months or less. The goal of the project is to train individuals for work in new careers and to get back in the workforce as quickly as possible. These careers have been identified as the fastest growing sectors for Burke County for projected years 2009-2018.

In support of the initiative, the Workforce Development Division of the Department of Commerce set aside $13.4 million dollars for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. Colleges began receiving funds in July 2009. Western Piedmont Community College received $176,038 to offer career opportunities to the community beginning in October 2009.

Certificate programs available beginning October 12, 2009 include: Green Construction, Personal Care Assistant, Basic Computers for Business, and Office/Clerical Support.

Students who complete the classes will receive a Career Readiness Certificate and have basic skills to explore employment opportunities. For more information contact Connie Brockland at 828-448-6721.
